Background: Severus Philtre Snape was born on November 15, 1960 on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. His parents, Durus and Nerienda Snape were at that time living in the dilapidated Snape estate on the Bodmin Moor. Both Durus and Nerienda were purebloods but Durus’ grandfather had squandered his fortune on prospects in India that fell through when the importation of magic carpets was stopped by the Ministry leaving the Snape family with little but a family name. Two years after Severus was born, as they no longer had the funds for the upkeep of the house, they boarded it up and moved to London where Durus sat up a small trade business in Knockturn Alley. Severus spent the next nine years on the streets of Knockturn Alley and helping his father in his shop, throughout this time he was exposed to a number of rare and unusual magical items and learned how to protect himself on the streets.
Durus and Nerienda did not have a happy marriage; she resented the move to London from the countryside and missed the wide open spaces of Cornwall. In the summer of 1971, just before Severus received his letter for Hogwarts, she fell ill and died despite the various potions that Durus brought home from the apothecary. Durus grew much cooler to and far more demanding of his son after Nerienda’s death. When Severus boarded the train to Hogwarts, it was without much money or respect, but with a great deal of pressure to gain both throughout his school career.
He was sorted into Slytherin house where he immediately learned to treat his housemates with the same cautiousness he’d learned to use on the streets of Knockturn Alley. He was soon the top Slytherin in his year in all of his studies. Lucius Malfoy, two years ahead of him, befriended him at this point, choosing to take him under his wing. Being forced to work so hard his entire life, he has a steely determination to gain both respect and power in the future.
Traits/Characteristics: Severus is detail oriented. Order and having everything within its place is very important to him. He is typically very focused on the task in front of him, so much so that he can become engrossed to the exclusion of anything else. He has little patience with anything that he sees to be unnecessary or not useful in his life. He is ambitious and craves recognition for tasks well done.
He does not make friends or trust people easily; growing up in Knockturn Alley and later in Slytherin House has taught him to be wary of nearly all people. He observes everything, particularly those people that he perceives to be trouble makers or potential enemies. Once you have earned his trust however, he will trust you completely and guard your secrets as zealously as he guards his own. When he allows himself to care, he cares deeply.
He has little patience with whinging or martyr complexes; he has gotten himself where he is by sheer will power and determination, and believes all humans are capable of taking life in the same stride. He can be closed minded and have difficulty seeing things from another perspective than his own and often becomes frustrated with people who do not see life in the same way. Blatant stupidity or unintelligence irritates him and causes him to be curt, sarcastic, and sometimes downright mean.
Arrogance, specifically when he perceives it to be unfounded in skill or intelligence and sometimes even when it is founded in both, is yet another trait he has little patience for. This is partially because of his own feelings of inadequacy and lack of self-esteem. This is the main cause of what touches on a superiority complex.
